As all of us know that retina is light sensitive layer inside the back portion of the eye to receive the light transmitted through cornea and natural lens. Retina has rods and cones which are light receptors converting the light stimulus into electrical signals and transmit them to occipital lobe of the brain through the intricate neuronal network for processing the visual information. Hence retina has the key role in maintaining the normal vision of the individual. After the routine eye check up pupil is dilated for detailed evaluation of the retina. It is very important in persons having short sight where periphery of the retina can have week spots (myopic degenerations) leading to retinal detachment. When a retinal hole or thinning is observed it can be sealed by lasers to prevent retinal detachment.
Diabetes mellitus is a common disorder in India affecting the adult population more often. It can cause DIABETIC RETINOPATHY, a blinding disorder which can slowly steal the vision if proper care is not exercised in controlling the diabetes. All diabetics should have the regular eye checkup to know the status of retina. Proper control of diabetes by diet, exercises, and medicines can prevent or delay diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy can be treated by regular medication to control bloodsugar, LASERS and vitrio retinal surgery to maintain the existing level of vision and to prevent further deterioration.

ARMD also known as age related macular degeneration. This is age related disorder usually common after the age of 50 to 60 years affecting mainly central portions of retina in both the eyes. For every individual central vision is very important for both distance and reading small prints. Since the central vision is lost in ARMD the quality of life is affected in these individuals. This is being treated by the lasers (TTT & PDT), Intravitrial injection of ANTIVEGF.
