Glaucoma is a unique disorder of eye causing gradual loss of vision affecting both the eyes. This problem is usually related to high intraocular pressure. Intraocular pressure increases due to gradual obstuction to out flow of aqueous humour, clear liquid inside eyes. 

Basically Glaucoma is classified as primary and secondary glaucoma. Primary is further sub divided into open angle type and closed angle type depending on the visibility of drainage angle structures.

Drainage angle is located between the root of the iris and periphery of the cornea on its inner side.

Usually Glaucoma is common after the age of 40 years. Regular eye check up every year helps in detecting the increased eye pressure. (Normal IOP ranges from 12-16 MM HG). By the time patient realizes the visual problem, considerable damage is seen in the retina. 

Diagnosing glaucoma in early stages is very important as good control of IOP helps in maintaining normal vision through out life. After the routine eye checkup, applanation tonometry, gonioscopy details, evaluation of the optic disk and visual filed analysis by the perimetry is done before intiating the therapy. 

Eye drops of several types are available to manage Glaucoma. Lasers and surgery are performed for selected candidates only.
