Awareness about the eye care is important for everybody to prevent or reduce the severity of eye problems, to know about good eye hygiene, to know about recent advances on eye care and to clarify certain myths.
Your eye the source of thousand shapes is under constant eyestrain & assault each day. Modern life styles, professional demands, pollution and other factors cause much deterioration of your vision. Hence you need to be alert and responsive quality eye care.
To make an assessment of one’s own vision, he/she should close one eye and view an object of interest & compare it with the other eye. If any difference in quality is noticed he has to seek the advice of an eye specialist. This can be done while watching TV, Computer, Reading a book, watching movie Etc.
Redness of eye is a common problem and cause of redness could be infection, allergy, eyestrain, dry eyes, inflation & sudden increase in eye pressure. Instead of resorting to self-medication one should get the eyes examined & get the treatment after identifying the cause. Eyes are very delicate organs in our body, if damage occurred it cannot be set right. Proper eye hygiene including lid margin cleaning prevents reputed eye infection.
Rubbing of eyes aggravates eye allergy & infection. Rolling the eye in a cup of water is not correct. Regular habit may lead to hydration of cornea, blurred vision, as water is hypo tonic. Even putting caster oil, honey inside the eye is not correct, as they are not sterile.
Similarly eye injuries cannot be ignored. A foreign body on the cornea or anywhere in the eye should be removed only by an eye specialist under microscope. Perforating injury needs immediate attention. Once can put only antibiotic drops (on water) & bandage the eye before reporting to the doctor. Wearing polycarbonate glasses in industries can prevent injuries to the eye. Use protective glass while riding two wheeler vehicles.
Continuous staring at, monitor leads to reduction in blink rate. Normally, we blink at the tare of 10-14/min & it is involuntary. Reduction in blink rate leads to reduced wetting of eyeball. Tears are secreted by tears glands, if not spread adequately on eye leads to blurring of vision & eyestrain & burning sensation. This is commonly known as computer vision syndrome.
- Taking a break for 20 seconds, after working for 20 minutes and looking at 20 feet away.
- Upper border of monitor should be below the level of eye with upper end tilted 15° backward.
- Avoiding glare from screen by having blank wall in front of monitor.
- Not sitting very close to AC blowers.
- Using antiglare screen & spectacle to block radiation.
- Using artificial tears whenever advised.
